Rain Rain Rain!

March 4th, 2011 by KC Construction

I know, I know…welcome to the Pacific Northwest. The chamber of commerce will tell you that it rarely rains in Sequim – but I was born and raised here and I know from experience that, while it doesn’t rain here nearly as much during the winter as other parts of western Washington, it still does, in fact, RAIN! But let’s try to find a positive aspect to all this moisture. This winter is providing an excellent opportunity to assess your drainage issues. We’ve been noticing standing water in places that you almost never seen it, probably a combination of the unusually heavy precipitation and the very heavy snowfall that we received at the end of February. Even if you rarely have problems with drainage, you might be noticing some areas of your property that could use some attention.

Improving your drainage is one of those projects that, once completed, most people will never notice. But good drainage is vitally important to both the condition of your home and use of your property. Take a look in your crawl space. Is there standing water? Walk over your drainfield. Does the soil feel wet and spongy? Depending on the lay of your land, correcting this issue could be as easy as installing a French drain to divert surface water away from foundations and septic systems or as complicated as the project we undertook about 4 years ago which involved leveling the low spot that collected water, building a large berm with a standpipe behind it to collect runoff, diverting it to a new catchment basin and directing the flow around the buildings. Problem solved!

If you’re looking for some advice or ideas about improving your drainage, give us a call. We can make plans now and correct them this summer when the ground finally dries out – and I promise, it WILL eventually dry out!
